What is pathogenic priming? Should I be concerned?
Pathogenic priming is the act of exposing an individual to foreign antigens in a manner that sets the conditions for the development of illness as a result of subsequent exposures to the same, or similar antigens. The results can include disease enhancement and autoimmunity. Specific mechanisms by which the body can become primed include the known mechanisms of autoimmunity including molecular mimicry, bystander activation, epitope spreading (persistent pathogen), cryptic antigens. Antibody dependent enhancement is a possible end product of pathogenic priming. The initial exposure can be from either a vaccine or an infection.
